Waka, or outrigger canoes, are part of the culture of Pacific people and in recent years has grown in popularity as a recreational activity and sport. The sport’s strengths and attraction for many of its participants seems to lie in its inclusiveness, accessibility, a firm grounding in Māori and Pacific culture and its focus on hauora (wellbeing).
